Take a tour of Painter Jasmin Hot’s New York City office, and you’ll find all the trappings of a true artist. The framed American flag designed from lost house keys; the sculpture crafted from half-inch pipes; the beautiful oil-on-canvas. All art he created to complement his residential and commercial painting business.

Hot has run a painting business for nearly 30 years, but his artistic roots go back much further than that when, as a child in Europe, he began as an assistant in his family’s painting business and watched as his mother shirked stereotypes--it was unusual for women to be house painters.

He calls his mother his “idol,” as she and his father supported the family with the business. He says that she was a master with a brush.

Working with his parents helped him develop his passion for painting, and he had his first painting enterprise in Germany, which he ran for seven years.

“It’s in the genes,” he says.

Jasmin has had a painting business in New York for 22 years, and now, with a relaunch as Manhattan Custom Painting, painting continues to be a family affair for Hot, as his wife Huma joins the team to contribute to the design end of things. She helps clients choose paint colors and handle other custom work. Their two sons are also active in the business.

While painting has evolved since his mother tackled the large jobs using just her favorite paintbrush, you can find him completing jobs from start to finish using that old-world European detail. Jasmin treats each job as if it was a masterpiece, taking on minor repairs, and paying attention to each piece of molding, drafty window, and a hidden corner.

Some of his favorite projects have included an NYC restaurant owned by Robert DeNiro, and a stunning single-family triplex in SoHo.

When he’s not painting or creating art, you can find Jasmin outdoors at his home in Pennsylvania--playing golf and tennis, snow skiing, or fishing.
